MVVS Background

The name MVVS in English means Modelling Research and Development Centre, and the factory was established in the early 1950's in Czechoslovakia. It is one of the oldest model engine manufacturers that is still going. MVVS has always been associated with well-made, high performance engines, and they have won many world championships in control-line and also in R/C events. In 1988 and 1997, MVVS engines won the world FAI pylon racing championships.

Since the fall of communism in the Czech Republic in 1989, the factory once again became a privately owned concern, and has grown from strength to strength since then. They now use the most modern CNC machinery to consistently produce these high-quality thoroughbred engines. All of the glow engines from .12 cu. inch (2 cc) to the .91 (15 cc) have ABC (Aluminium/Brass/Chrome) pistons and liners. Another unique feature of the engines from .15 to .91 is that the upper cylinder casing can rotate, so that the exhaust port can face either side or the rear. This is the reason why no MVVS engines are supplied with silencers as standard. Their silencers are reasonably priced and they also supply tuned silencers and manifolds.

I can personally vouch for the durability of these engines, as I have modified some of their engines to run as diesels. I have flown at two world championships with MVVS .49 diesels, and I have yet to break one. The diesel has a much higher compression ratio than a glow engine, so this is most impressive. A full range of spares is available, and I carry most of the spares that are required after an accident. I have sold hundreds of these engines, since I've had the agency in 2000, and I have had very few engine problems from the factory. In all cases, I have repaired the problem, or replaced the engine. My track record speaks for itself. The engines come with a 2 year warranty. I will also repair any engine up to 80% of the cost of a new engine.

I feel that the MVVS glow engines are mostly under-rated here in South Africa. Sure they cost more than the cheap Asian engines, but on performance, they can compete with the best Japanese and Italian high performance engines, and they are better priced. They will also outlast most engines. I have listed the popular glow engines that I regularly sell, along with their specifications. Please feel free to ask me for any further information.

MVVS Glow engines

All MVVS glow engines from the .15 to the .91 have ABC pistons and liners. This means that the piston is Aluminium, the sleeve, or cylinder is Brass, and that is plated with a hard Chrome layer. The top of the cylinder has a slight taper built in, and this is where the engine’s compression at close to TDC (Top Dead Centre) comes from. The tolerances are extremely critical, and although precision machining is a must, the final good fit for decent compression is derived from proper running in. ABC engines must not be run-in slowly with a very rich mixture. The correct method of running-in is with a fast speed, without making the mixture too lean. It is also essential to use a good fuel with a castor oil content of at least 20%, or a mixture of 50/50 castor and synthetic. Many critics have said that the MVVS engines take too long to run-in, well, all I can say is that all of the high-performance engines like Rossi, Nelson, Profi etc., take at least an hour to two hours to settle down properly. If an ABC engine is ready to go flat-out in 20 minutes, then it is not likely to run well for a long time. So, have patience, and run in your new MVVS ABC engine well, and it will serve you well for many years.

The suffix “GFS/R” stands for G-glow, F-front, S/R-side or rear exhaust. The ability of the upper casing to rotate, allowing side or rear exhaust operation, is a unique feature of the MVVS .15 to .91. This is also the reason why these engines do not come with any silencers. There are a number of silencers from the standard side muffler to side and rear-mounted tuned silencers that can be bought at reasonable prices.

All MVVS engines have a 2-year warranty!

MVVS Silencers

Below is a list of the popular silencers and exhaust adapters (headers) available for the above engines. The black tuned silencers are similar to the old “Magic muffler”, and have a broad throttle range, unlike the full-length tuned pipes. They come complete with adapters, silicone tubing, screws etc.
